Review
This is official description applies to version 1.2
The Public folder lets you easily share single files in your Dropbox. Any file you put in this folder gets its own Internet link that you can share with others -- even non-Dropbox users! Drop a file into the Public folder. Right-click this file, then choose Dropbox. That's it! To share your file, just send the link to a friend.
The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 1.1
Dropbox application was created by the Dropbox team in order to make it easy for you to share files or create an online back-up of your data.
Once installed, this application creates a special folder named “Dropbox”. After adding the files you want to share to the Dropbox folder you can start the synchronizing process with the Dropbox website. Your files are automatically uploaded on the Dropbox server and can be accessed from almost any device with an active Internet connection. If you are using Dropbox on multiple devices, you are able to keep them synchronized simply by installing the Dropbox application on each computer and use the same Dropbox account. The application is able to automatically synchronize that content to any other computer, every time changes are made in the Dropbox folder. The good news is that when uploading via the Dropbox desktop application there is no file size limit.
With a Dropbox free account you are able to upload a maximum of 2 GB, but by using the Dropbox referral system you can gain up to 8 GB. Invite your friends to register on Dropbox. You will get an extra of 250 MB bonus space for each of your friends that joins Dropbox after your invitation. Another cool thing is that students can earn up to 16GB and double their referral credit. All they have to do is submit their email address to the Dropbox website. You can always get more space simply by upgrading your free account to the paid Pro account.
The Dropbox application works with Windows, Mac, Linux, iPad, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. It is especially designed to transfer just the parts of a file that change, increasing the speed of the synchronization process. Users are able to manually set the bandwidth limits in order to prevent Dropbox from slowing down the Internet connection.
The Dropbox team worked hard to ensure the security of your files. They claim that in some cases your files are actually safer while stored on Dropbox than on you computer. Dropbox uses similar security methods as banks. Your private files on Dropbox can be seen by others strictly with your invitation. Furthermore, Dropbox employees are only allowed to see the file metadata, without being permitted to access the file content.
Dropbox uses modern encryption methods to both transfer and store your data, such as SSL and AES-256 bit encryption. Dropbox also uses Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) for storage, which has a robust security policy of its own.
The program keeps a monthly history of your work, allowing you to recover any deleted or lost file. Dropbox is optimized in order to keep your files safe and sound, no matter where you’re working from. This way you will be able to finish the work you started at your office from your home computer.
Dropbox is a very useful sharing service and the Dropbox application makes it even easier to share files. |
